Visualizing Data with D3
Limited Capacity filling up

Description: D3.js is one of the most powerful data visualization
libraries out there. Newsrooms around the world use it to build both
static and interactive graphics for the web (and for print!). This
workshop will walk you through the fundamental what, why, and how of
using D3 to turn your data into rich visuals with HTML, CSS, and other
acronyms. By the end, you'll have built, broken, and unbroken several
D3 charts. If you have a project in mind, or a dataset you want to
work with, bring it along!

Who is this for: People who've worked on some interactives and web
visualizations and want to take their skills to the next level.

Prior requirements: A working knowledge of HTML and CSS, and some
JavaScript experience (i.e. you should understand the basics of how
functions, variables, loops, and arrays work).

Mapping Basics: What can I do with spatial data?
Limited Capacity filling up

Learn how to take mappable data and analyze it in some common ways, as well as some common ways to put those maps on the Internet. How can you find out how many addresses fall in a mile of, say, local parks and schools? How can you calculate summary numbers from spatial data? What are some strategies for making an engaging map online? This session is meant to be an introduction to the concepts and give examples of how to execute those, and not to be a comprehensive how-to.

Who is this session for:
This session is for anyone who wants to learn basics of how spatial data works, and the kinds of stories you can publish once you understand these concepts.

What prior knowledge or requirements are needed to attend:
None required, though it would be helpful to understand basic mapping, programming or data concepts.

Visualizing the Distribution of Data with D3.js
Limited Capacity filling up

Visualizing the composition of a large collection of data points is a common problem when explaining news. Whether you're explaining demographics, visualizing sports statistics, or looking at you're site's analytics data, using simple averages often hides trends or can even be misleading. In this workshop we'll walk through more informative ways of visualizing the distribution of data with D3 using histograms and less traditional visuals that make the data more relatable to the reader. To illustrate these visuals, we'll use online traffic data from Parse.ly's network of thousands of publishers representing billions of user interactions.

This workshop is for anyone working on visualizations for print or the web. Introductory level experience with D3.js is best for this workshop. If you have not previously worked with D3.js, attendance of the "Visualizing data with D3" workshop on Thursday is perfect to get you ready for this workshop. To follow along during the workshop, you will need a laptop that's able to connect to the internet and a Github account.

Sponsored by Parse.ly.
