Reaching underserved audiences with news they can use
Limited Capacity filling up

It feels like there is a lot of focus right now on news media proving that it’s worthy of a consumer’s trust. But gaining trust can't happen unless we understand folks who don't regularly seek out news in the first place. They may only encounter news by chance, simply choose not to for various reasons, or have little to no access to the news. How might we use design and products to engage people who don't really pay attention to the news or are underserved in their communities?

In this workshop, we’ll kick things off with a quick overview of current research into news audiences (Pew, Knight Foundation, etc). Presenters from NPR and WNYC will share some insights and experiences in reaching a variety of different audiences. Then, we’ll work together to draw inspiration from these materials and try to come up with new ideas for reaching those who are currently going unserved (or underserved) by current news offerings. You’ll leave this session with new ideas that you can put into practice in your organization.

Expected attendance: 30-40 attendees. We’re seeking a mix of digital and newsroom perspectives to facilitate an optimal conversation about the future of the news.

Location-Sketching Expedition
Limited Capacity seats available

Location: Fulton Center Subway Station. Meet inside the doors at the Southwest corner of Broadway and Fulton. From Jorge: “This venue, only a couple years old, and unknown to many people, thus inviting to a fresh look, seeing it for what it is, not what we’ve known or heard it is. More of a discovery. And so powerful in its metallic solidity. It’s like being inside an engine.“

A field-trip workshop geared at documenting a NYC location by way of touchscreen drawings. After an inspirational slideshow, the group will identify key aspects of the chosen place and will set work individually in a series of quick descriptive sketches. Those will be immediately compiled at an online visual report of that environment. Final location is still being determined.

Who is this for:
People who don’t draw professionally but are not afraid to try. That’s more important than skill or experience.

What’s required:
A smartphone or tablet with a drawing app you have used at least a couple times and are comfortable using. It’s not about learning an app, it’s about working with it.

Mapping Basics: What can I do with spatial data?
Limited Capacity filling up

Learn how to take mappable data and analyze it in some common ways, as well as some common ways to put those maps on the Internet. How can you find out how many addresses fall in a mile of, say, local parks and schools? How can you calculate summary numbers from spatial data? What are some strategies for making an engaging map online? This session is meant to be an introduction to the concepts and give examples of how to execute those, and not to be a comprehensive how-to.

Who is this session for:
This session is for anyone who wants to learn basics of how spatial data works, and the kinds of stories you can publish once you understand these concepts.

What prior knowledge or requirements are needed to attend:
None required, though it would be helpful to understand basic mapping, programming or data concepts.

Leading with Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is more relevant than ever in our current news environment. We need it to fight ignorance, and we need it to thrive as successful businesses. Companies all over the world today find themselves at the junction where creativity meets critical thinking. The current digital business orthodoxy assumes that we'll find creativity with post-its and critical thinking through A/B tests. But to what extent do these ceremonies work? Are they enough? And crucially, what more can we do?

Type in Couture
Taking a colorful, beautiful romp through fashion history, this presentation looks at the typographic trends that have defined an industry. Perhaps no other category has so thoroughly examined how we define beauty, and the typographic details of fashion are no exception.

Through research and interviews with top NYC fashion art directors, editorial design directors, and the Met Costume Institute, this talk examines the prolific nature of image making in the fashion industry. From Alexey Brodovitch’s work bringing constructivist principles to fashion typography to Moschino’s use of quotidian branding into clothing itself, we examine the gamut of letterforms in couture.

A talk in three chapters, I’ll discuss and show editorial type, fashion branding, and letters on clothes. The presentation looks at the typographic precedents established in the most visual and self-aware industry we’ve ever known.

Design, journalism and how to get great work done: What I've learned in 10 years at The Washington Post
This month, I'm celebrating ten years at The Washington Post. My approach to design and journalism has grown and evolved enormously in that time, and so has the company. I'll share the experiences I've had  -- and lessons I've learned -- as I created and edited work in different roles in the organization, moving from digital to print to AR to product, and from a maker to a leader, as the Post has undergone an incredible transformation. Expect to see some really old projects that show just how far we've all come.

Reframing Mental Health in the Media
Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc. will host a Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health discussion with Lloyd Hale, cast member of the Be Vocal documentary, Beyond Silence.

The conversation will focus on the power of sharing mental health stories honestly and through various mediums, including through creative outlets like film. It will also explore how mental health is represented in the media, pop culture and in society, and the power of honest, real and raw storytelling in the modern media era. Lloyd can help draw the connection between sharing mental health stories and inspiring others to speak up and get support – and even share their own personal narratives.

Lloyd will also discuss his experience on the Beyond Silence set: why he chose to share his story in this documentary, working with professional storytellers to ensure his story was represented accurately, and the impact it has had on his life since.

The conversation will strive to highlight the role the media and people with a platform play in shaping public perception of mental health, encourage audience attendees to speak up for mental health – and guide the audience on how to do so more accurately and sensitively.

Visualizing the Distribution of Data with D3.js
Limited Capacity filling up

Visualizing the composition of a large collection of data points is a common problem when explaining news. Whether you're explaining demographics, visualizing sports statistics, or looking at you're site's analytics data, using simple averages often hides trends or can even be misleading. In this workshop we'll walk through more informative ways of visualizing the distribution of data with D3 using histograms and less traditional visuals that make the data more relatable to the reader. To illustrate these visuals, we'll use online traffic data from Parse.ly's network of thousands of publishers representing billions of user interactions.

This workshop is for anyone working on visualizations for print or the web. Introductory level experience with D3.js is best for this workshop. If you have not previously worked with D3.js, attendance of the "Visualizing data with D3" workshop on Thursday is perfect to get you ready for this workshop. To follow along during the workshop, you will need a laptop that's able to connect to the internet and a Github account.

Leveling the Playing Field by Making Digital Tools Accessible for Journalists
A fireside chat between John Keefe of Quartz and Angelica McKinley of Slack exploring how media organizations and the different teams within them can effectively utilize digital tools like Slack to integrate newsroom tools and processes. Quartz leverages a variety of digital tools to enable its journalists to report the news faster and with great accuracy, but it also feels it has a responsibility to take on a larger mission of supporting organizations that lack onsite developers by granting them access to such open-source journalism tools. To that end, Quartz built Quackbot, an open-source Slack bot that performs tasks journalists do often such as finding reliable data and proofreading stories.

Drawing on her experience in digital storytelling at The New York Times and brand design at Slack, Angelica McKinley will discuss with John Keefe how coverage desks and visual journalism teams can leverage digital tools with Slack to improve their workflows, connect with readers and collaborate with internal and external departments.
