It feels like there is a lot of focus right now on news media proving that it’s worthy of a consumer’s trust. But gaining trust can't happen unless we understand folks who don't regularly seek out news in the first place. They may only encounter news by chance, simply choose not to for various reasons, or have little to no access to the news. How might we use design and products to engage people who don't really pay attention to the news or are underserved in their communities?

In this workshop, we’ll kick things off with a quick overview of current research into news audiences (Pew, Knight Foundation, etc). Presenters from NPR and WNYC will share some insights and experiences in reaching a variety of different audiences. Then, we’ll work together to draw inspiration from these materials and try to come up with new ideas for reaching those who are currently going unserved (or underserved) by current news offerings. You’ll leave this session with new ideas that you can put into practice in your organization.

Expected attendance: 30-40 attendees. We’re seeking a mix of digital and newsroom perspectives to facilitate an optimal conversation about the future of the news.
